Reentry Council to meet July 19

July 13, 2016

State corrections officials and legislators have been invited to participate in a July 19 workshop that will address implementation of best practices for reducing inmate recidivism.

The Mississippi Reentry Council program will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the training room at the Gartin Justice Building at 450 High Street in Jackson. The Reentry Council will conduct a business session at 1 p.m.

The workshop speaker is Dennis Schrantz, director of the Center for Justice Innovation at the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency. Schrantz formerly served as the deputy director of Planning and Community Development for the Michigan Department of Corrections. The Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative resulted in a 12 percent reduction in that state’s prison population.

The Mississippi Reentry Council business meeting is expected to include discussion of hiring Young People in Recovery, a nonprofit organization, to work toward implementing a reentry program for inmates and former inmates on probation.

The Reentry Council works to create effective strategies to assist former inmates in their return to society, reduce recidivism, provide ample funds for operating the state prison system and improve public safety. U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett of Hattiesburg is chairman of the Reentry Council.
